The Madras Crocodile Bank

The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology, popularly known as the Crocodile Bank, is a leading reptile zoo and research station located on the East Coast Road near Mahabalipuram. Founded in 1976 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker, its primary mission is to promote the conservation of reptiles and amphibians through education, scientific research, and captive breeding. The bank is spread across 8.5 acres and is one of the largest reptile zoos in Asia, home to over 2,500 crocodiles, alligators, gharials, and other reptiles like turtles and snakes. The center is a pioneer in the conservation of the three endangered Indian crocodile species: the mugger crocodile, the saltwater crocodile, and the gharial. It has successfully bred over 5,000 crocodiles, contributing significantly to their preservation. The Crocodile Bank also houses one of India's only approved venom extraction centers, the Irula Snake Catchers' Industrial Cooperative Society. This initiative not only aids in snake conservation but also provides a livelihood for the local Irula community. Visitors can expect an exciting and educational experience as they walk through the well-maintained enclosures. The bank offers informative guided tours and hosts feeding sessions, providing a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close. It also features a night safari, allowing visitors to see the reptiles' nocturnal behavior. The Madras Crocodile Bank is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a critical hub for wildlife conservation and research, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in nature and herpetology.
