DakshinaChitra Museum

DakshinaChitra, meaning "a picture of the south," is a unique living-history museum located on the East Coast Road, south of Chennai. It was founded in 1996 by the Madras Craft Foundation with the mission of preserving and promoting the diverse heritage and culture of South India. The museum is a heritage village where visitors can explore the lifestyles of people from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala. What makes DakshinaChitra truly special is its collection of 18 reconstructed historical houses. These architectural gems were saved from demolition, meticulously dismantled from their original locations, and reconstructed at the museum site by skilled artisans. Each house represents a different vernacular style and offers a glimpse into the daily life of various communities, from merchants and silk weavers to farmers and potters. Beyond the architecture, the museum is home to a treasure trove of over 4,000 artifacts, 14,000 books, and a vast collection of pictures. It serves as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting a range of special programs, including folk performing arts, traditional dances, and craft workshops. Visitors can engage with artisans, witness the creation of traditional handicrafts, and learn about the region's rich artistic traditions. DakshinaChitra is more than just a museum; it's a journey through time that allows you to experience the authentic rural and urban life of South India. It is a testament to the dedication of preserving traditional knowledge and artistic skills for future generations.
